D:RC Is in the House Spinning Chill Vibes
Darcy Reenis kicks off Spring with a FED-exclusive Liquid Drum 'n Bass Mix
As the name implies, drum 'n bass music's most important elements are drums/percussion and the bassline, but that's a reductive way to describe a pretty versatile genre of dance music. Born out of the early 90s UK rave scene, the genre is thought to have originated through cultural cross-pollination when club DJs started mixing the newly popular acid house and techno with sped up US hip hop breakbeats and dancehall reggae sounds and samples. Initially dubbed "jungle" this new strain of music exploded in popularity in underground dance music circles when producers latched on to the sound, and by the late 90's, it had metastasized into its own smaller separate subgenres.
One such sub-genre is liquid drum'n bass (aka liquid funk or liquid DNB). Typified by melodic instrumentation and atmospherics, the genre is influenced by jazz, soul, and blues. Purveyors of the music pay great attention to the ambiance or "vibe" created within the music, and the result is something that is just as easily enjoyed in clubs as it is at the beach or in a home setting.
In the late 90s, I was already hooked on DNB but it was on the darker, more aggressive end of the spectrum. As a big fan of a lot of music coming out of the 90s acid jazz and downtempo UK scenes, I was of course fully on board when it appeared that the sounds of these respective scenes were starting to merge into liquid DNB.
Fast forward to 2020, during pandemic times, when we were all stuck at home and looking for ways to connect with each other without being physically present. Liquid Lovers Lounge came about when I discovered the video streaming platform Twitch and its huge community of DJ livestreamers. Streaming some groovy, vibey, and upbeat music seemed like the perfect reason to congregate online and "hang out" virtually with friends in a chatroom while getting to DJ live on video from my home studio. It became a ritual I looked forward to on a weekly basis, and I’m still doing it.
This hour-long mix—cut exclusively for FED—is sort of a snapshot of the type of music I like to play during these streaming sessions. I think of this mix as kind of a "celebration of all things Spring." Good weather, spending more time outdoors, maybe entertaining friends with good food, or just hanging out by the pool with a cocktail... This could be your soundtrack!
